Jom EAT! // Aunty Manju's Banana Leaf Rice @ TTDI

Updated: Jan 17

Nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, banana leaf rice...... Name a rice dish I wouldn't enjoy.

I like banana leaf rice. Yes, I like the very typical Malaysian way of flooding the rice with assortment of curries. When we are in Bandar Utama - Taman Tun Dr Ismail area, our favourite place to go for banana leaf rice is Aunty Manju's Home of Banana Leaf.

It was once featured on bi.sh_eat on 22.08.2018. Yes, we've known this place for some time now.

*bi.sh_eat was one of our earlier effort to encourage readers to discover good food within their vicinity, but soon after its initial launch, we had to somehow "discontinue" it due to pregnancy.

We found ourselves in Aunty Manju's again this morning. It was so natural as we were craving for rice and curries. Parking around this area could be a nightmare during weekdays but so much more bearable on weekends. Another reason to come on weekends! I like how the variety of hot dishes are displayed and kept warm in trays and we can see how the staff there handle the food.

All dishes were mouth-watering. We ordered two portions of banana leaf rice, adding on mutton masala and fried chicken to share. The banana leaf rice was served with four types of vegetables on side, and our favourite papadum. The climax of the spree must have been flooding the rice with dhal, chicken curry and fish curry. All these curries carry different flavour profiles but when mixed together, it becomes a flavour bomb. We just had to do it tsunami style.

You're exclaiming "That's not tsunami!"? Chill-lah, after taking photos, all drowned in tsunami. I must admit that somehow the vegetables on the side served in other joints do not excite me most of the time. But Aunty Manju's hit it differently. In fact, the side dishes were one of the highlights on the banana leaf - so appropriately complementing the meal. We also like the curries here being mild and not too overpowering. Thick curries are good, but they might overshadow other components of the meal - so it's another credit for the curries in Aunty Manju's. I must admit that out of the two dishes we ordered to go along with our banana leaf rice, I prefer mutton masala.

The mutton masala here is cooked to tender in a medley of spices (I don't know what spices made this dish, so just enjoy the dish). It's so tasty and goes so well with the rice. Mind you, Aunty Manju's also serves extremely addictive Lamb Bone Marrow. Don't miss it. To be honest, the fried chicken wasn't bad too (it's delicious okay), it's a whole piece of chicken leg well-marinated and deep fried to perfection. The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. It's what you would expect from a piece of decent fried chicken. BUT I'm sorry, chicken, because mutton has to win this time.

Poor Zyan didn't quite like curry :\

The total price of this meal was RM42.80 (together with two drinks), I'd say reasonable for the food we were served.
