Jom EAT! // Daruma Syokudo @ 1 Mont Kiara

It all ended on a high note. It's true! Surprises hide unexpectedly.

1 Mont Kiara is one of our favourite dinner spots, especially when we are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to unwind a day's work-related stress. There are several eateries here - some are outlets of gigantic F&B chains, while some are independently-owned restaurants. Now when we think about it, we notice we're always here for Japanese food - be it ramen or sushi, it's a great place to get a quick Jap food fix.

That being said, we've passed by Daruma Syokudo numerous times, but hadn't really a chance to patronise it. We don't know why did it take so long for us to finally walk in to this Japanese canteen-themed restaurant one evening. Of course, after work.

Numerous shopfront posters and menus were displayed, we took a while to browse through everything before walking in. The interior was simple and to me, rather disorganised. The layout of the restaurant seemed awkward with a partition right in the middle but did not allow enough privacy - it seemed purposeless. Lights were rather dim, it somehow reminded us of the a typical Japanese izakaya. There might be some wall paintings, but we really didn't give too much attention to them.

Menu was quite extensive, but since the restaurant specialised in ramen and tan tan ramen, we didn't want to miss the chance sampling the noodles. Both Garlic Kuro Tonkotsu Ramen and Rich Miso Tonkotsu Ramen looked really appealing from the menu, but we finally decided to go with Rich Tonkotsu Tantan Ramen. I was on a diet to cut down carbo intake after 5pm every day, so we ordered a bowl of salad to make the meal "healthier" - Chashu Caesar Salad.

(Sorry, we didn't take a lot of photos!)

Rich Tonkotsu Tantan Ramen (RM29)

Every element in the bowl of tantan ramen was pure delight. The pork bone broth was soooooooooooooooo creamy with rich pork flavour, ramen itself was stringy and cooked to the right doneness to maintain some level of chewiness. To spice up the bowl, a spoonful of spicy miso was added on top. We specifically love the chashu (Japanese braised pork belly) here - slightly charred, delicate-smokey flavour - a star! The ajitsuke tamago (ramen egg) however, was a tad bit too cooked, we prefer runnier yolk. We had a brief conversation with one of the waiting staff there, who claimed the vegetables used in all the dishes were freshly delivered to the shop every day. That explained the spring onion in the bowl being another highlight.

Chashu Caesar Salad (RM15)

Mentioned earlier in this post, we ordered a bowl of salad to help us feel better (lol). We were wrong. The Chashu Caesar Salad actually made us feel happy. The generous amount of fresh greens (really fresh), topped with crunchy (and sort of chunky) croutons and a quartered ajitsuke tamago have already made us contented. The flaky shredded chashu further enhanced the taste profile of this salad - it's really a wholesome meal on its own. Oh, have I mentioned the caesar dressing? It's full-flavoured. Yums.

What do we think about Daruma Syokudo?

Authentic and affordable Japanese food in the unaffordable community of Mont Kiara, Daruma Syokudo is a true gem to those who love hearty and quality Japanese food. We really love the fresh and crisp vegetables used in this restaurant, a big credit for that. The restaurant also offers a wide variety of snacks and set meals. I think we will be returning soon.
