Jom EAT! // Hanwoori Korean Restaurant @ Ampang

Updated: Jan 17

What's your fix on a rainy day? Mine -- heart-warming hot food.

It's raining in the evening of our 6th dating anniversary. Billy and I had initially planned to celebrate the day with authentic Chinese Szechuan hotpot, but had to give up the plan. I was rather grumpy that we had to change the plan due to awful traffic condition following a rainy afternoon. We ended up in Ampang.

When we speak of Ampang, the first thing came into our mind would be the very, very useful ramyeon pot and a box of extremely flavourful kimchi we bought from a Korean supermarket here. Oh yes, when we speak of Ampang, everything appears in mind is related to Korea(n).

There are a few Korean restaurants in Ampang Jaya serving the Korean community in this area. While it could be a challenge to decide which serves the best Korean meals, we decided to try out Hanwoori Korean Restaurant instead of our usual one, and we didn't regret at all.

Sorry for the awkward angle! It was raining, we couldn't have gotten better point of view.

The setting in Hanwoori is rather basic - nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable. The staff was attentive and friendly. They took initiative to refill our cups before they went empty, and offered to refill our ban-chan plates.

After browsing through the extensive menu, we decided to order Dweji Galbi (RM37) and Gochujang Sam Gyeop Sal (RM32). A rainy evening with grilled meat? Nothing beats that. To make it even more awesome, we also ordered Sundubu-jjigae (RM25) (Korean Spicy Soft Tofu Stew) to share.

Happy anniversary, my love. You're a happy boy, aren't you?

The service was quick and efficient. Soon, the meat was grilling away over the hot charcoal fire. Aroma quickly filled the restaurant with enticing whiff. So good that we can tell immediately this would be a satisfying dinner. The water skilfully flipped the meat every few minutes so the meat wouldn't be too charred. When the meat was almost done, he cut it into bite-size pieces - just the usual procedure we would see in most of the Korean BBQ restaurants in Malaysia.

The whole experience was impeccable. The pork ribs and pork belly were well-marinated. Billy jokingly said it must have been soaking in the marinade for few months (lol). The savoury lingered in mouth for a while before leaving a tiny bit of sweet aftertaste, such a delight. Meat was tender and grilled to just right - we loved the smokey flavour from the grilling.

Together with raw garlic pieces and Korean bean paste wrapped in fresh lettuce, the flavour bomb blew us away. So impressive. It didn't feel like a burden at all to finish the grilled meat - we told ourselves we had a lot of lettuce, too.

The Sundubu-jjigae too, was comforting. Mildly spicy, there was an assortment of seafood and silky soft tofu pieces in this earthenware bowl. We guess the soup base was slow-boiled from prawn shells, because we spotted some whole-shells in the stew. On a rainy day like this, hot stew can be anyone's soul food.

The total bill came at RM99.65 (including 6% service tax). We think this is absolutely reasonable, consider the quality of food. Before we left, we had a brief conversation with the lady-owner and she really did bust some of the Korean culture myths (for us). We won't hesitate patronising Hanwoori again.
