Jom EAT! | Kari Kepala Ikan D'Tugu View

Updated: Jan 17

As much as we view Tugu Negara as our utmost patriotic National Monument, there's little we knew about the vicinity of the area. At least to us, we didn't know there's a little hidden gem tucked away in the lush greenery surrounding the area. So one day, I was really in the mood for rich, scrumptious fish head curry. We browsed through our options and shortlisted a few which carry good reviews. When we stumbled upon Mark Wiens' vlog about D'Tugu View Cafe, we were salivating and our mind yelled, "This is it!"

We parked our car at a spot just right outside the National Monument. However, we then found out there're designated parking lots for the customers to the cafe. The cafe is located on a hill, lucky for us that there's a stairway leading towards the cafe from where we parked our car. The setting of the cafe was unassuming. Despite the simple setting, we actually like the ambience: very easy-going and comfortable due to the trees surrounding it.

A wide array of food was freshly-prepared in the makeshift kitchen there. I let le husband to pick our dishes to share while I handle our baby boy's highchair. Le husband seemed to have made wise choice: He ordered a serving of fish head curry, a piece of fried chicken, squid cooked in curry, some stir-fried cabbage for sharing.

We really enjoyed the lunch. The fish head curry was rich with a well blend of spices but the sourish shredded mango atop it gave it a nice balance. Le husband chose a medium-sized fish head and it was cooked to perfection. We didn't like overcooked fish head but this was done so well that the flesh was tender and juicy, very succulent to our liking. Other ingredients in the curry were a delightful addition to the dish.

Other dishes were above average too, except the "fried chicken" which we expected to be crispy on the skin but it didn't turn out to be that way. We took it as another way of making "fried chicken" and didn't have much to complain.

Overall, it was a great place for fish head curry and we definitely recommend it. The price was slightly above average but still reasonable, considering its location in the city. The next time we crave for fish head curry again, we know there's a place we can rely on.
