Jom EAT! // Nasi Kandar Hameediyah @ Georgetown, Penang

Updated: Sep 9

The wide array of dishes and the medley of various curries, it's like a symphony orchestrating in my mouth.

Hameediyah Restaurant is the oldest Nasi Kandar restaurant in Malaysia. Established in 1907, it has evolved from a humble Nasi Kandar start-up to a landmark restaurant now - for the past 113 years. The original establishment is still operating at Campbell Street in Georgetown, Penang. The fascia of the shop is pale yellow in colour, with the shop name casted in relief of green colour, such a vintage beauty. The restaurant has now expanded its scale. There is another outlet just a few doors away, on the same row of shop.

It's Awal Muharram on the day we were there. The place was busy, and people stood in line, waiting for their turn. The queue was really long, we decided to buy takeaways instead.

At the entrance, there is a station making murtabak. As the murtabak skillfully flipped on the iron hot plate, I began to drool. The cook stationed there to make murtabak was extremely friendly. And I think they must have been well-trained in handling customers who are too eager to taking photos / videos of them.

Due to new norm under MCO, only a few customers are allowed in the shop simultaneously. As we went deeper into the shop, it was like a newfound paradise. Trays of hot dishes were displayed on and around the counter, aroma of mixed herbs and spices lingered, enticing our tastebuds. This joint really offers quality food: from the common ayam goreng berempah and an assortment of different curries and rendang, to the more premium ones like giant squids, lamb shanks, lobsters (yeap), crabs etc. It was a strain to pick - so tempted to just buy all.

Sorry for the poor photo quality! It was really done in a hurry.

We eventually decided to get a lamb shank (RM30/pc), a fried squid (RM60/pc - depending on size), and two pieces of fried chicken. Since we were going to eat it later, we requested for the mixed curries to be packed separately. The humorous staff must be a curry guru, a little bit this and that added up and a flavour bomb assembled.

We headed back to our homestay right away. When it's about good food, there's no excuse wasting another second loitering around. Quick! Unlock the door! Quick! Unpack the food! Aroma filled the air. It smelt so tasty, even the air would approve.

Time to dig in. The winner is definitely the lamb shank! The mixed spices was not overpowering at all, everything was used just rightly balance, and the meat was cooked to perfect tenderness. This is the lamb shank you would happily eat like a chicken drumstick - with hands! For this lamb shank, I can return to Penang for another 3000 times. Then it's the fried squid. We got a slightly bigger one to share. The flesh was thick but remained springy mouthfeel, a sign of it being fried so skilfully. No chewy bite. The batter didn't stick on, however, which was a slight minus, but we did happily eat up everything. Comparatively, fried chicken wasn't impressively outstanding. Don't misunderstand. Fried chicken was good, with aromatic outer layer and juicy flesh. Unfortunately, nothing can win over the lamb shank on that day. If you're curious about the mixed curries, we poured it over our rice, made sure every grain was drowned, so no wastage. (Hehehe)

Overall, it was a super satisfying late lunch. I should emphasise again. I will not hesitate returning for more.
