Today, we just feel like going somewhere not as hectic as the town, we thought of Kuala Kubu Bharu. KKB, as it is fondly known, is a charming little town at the foothills of Bukit Fraser in Hulu Selangor. One place to enjoy home-styled Hainanese cooking in a traditional shophouse is Sun Sun Nam Cheong. This is an old style restaurant still maintains its old fixtures and signage.
The restaurant is very clean, and the setting is rather simple but authentic old school style. This restaurant has been around for more than 60 years and today it is run by the son who himself has aged.
Mdm Tan (the owner’s wife) is a friendly person. When we sat down, she came with a menu and began chatting with us. After we took a look at the menu, we were salivating and felt like ordering everything from the menu. Finally, we decided to order two cups of Cham (Malaysian style coffee mixed with tea and condensed milk), a Hainanese Chicken Chop, and Billy also took a small packet of pre-packed Nasi Lemak (this is completely addictive).
We truly enjoyed our meal. The Hainanese Chicken Chop is well-marinated and very flavourfully deep-fried. We also liked the fact that the batter coating wasn't too thick. This dish may sound awkward to many but Malaysians will mostly enjoy it. Yes, it's a Malaysian kind of thing. The chicken chop comes with some French fries and a fried egg with runny yolk. The yolk provides another layer of richness to the dish. Awesome!
Next time when you find yourself in this quaint little town of Kuala Kubu Bharu, you should really drop by and try it yourself.
