Jom EAT! // Toast & Roast @ SS2

Updated: Jan 17

Melt-in-mouth char siew (Cantonese barbecued pork) has always been a joy we couldn't resist.

Siu mei (燒味), the simply addictive range of Cantonese roasted meat, is sheer joy to many who enjoy eating meat. Apart from the roasted chicken, roasted duck and roasted pork belly (siu-yuk), we always find char siew (Cantonese barbecued pork) a rather tempting choice for the both of us. Yes, we have no resistance against glistening and perfectly roasted meat hanging in front of the Chinese BBQ restaurants.

One of the places we would go for char siew is Toast & Roast @ SS2. Tucked away at the lesser known part of SS2 in Petaling Jaya, Toast & Roast rose to fame by serving one of the best char siew in PJ area.

A very humble shopfront during this pandemic condition.

Despite the simple shopfront setting, Toast & Roast is always crowded during lunch hours when white collars working around the area would stop by for a quick lunch fix. We were so much tempted by the hanging row of roasted chicken, roasted pork belly (siu yuk) and of course, char siew.

After checking in with MySejahtera and having body temperature checked (this is part of the Malaysia's SOP during pandemic battle), we browsed through the menu, and decided to order their signature roasted meat, to go with rice and their famous Hakka noodle.

Chicken Rice with Char Siew (RM9.00)

Yes, we specifically asked for chicken thigh. It's our favourite part of a chicken. The portion came with chicken rice, a serving of char siew and roasted chicken thigh, a bowl of soup, some tangy chicken rice chilli sauce and a small plate of char siew sauce. Unlike most of the time, I first tasted a tiny bit of char siew sauce from the back of my spoon. OMG. The sweet and savoury sauce in a thick (and sticky) consistency successfully made me crave for more. The glistening char siew was inviting - perfectly charred, juicy and tender - the secret of this amazing delight must have been the carefully selected cut of meat well marinated and barbecued properly. The char siew served was of the right proportion of fattiness and leanness. To be frank, I don't quite fancy lean char siew. Just not my cup of tea.

A sinful but pleasurable bite.

The roasted chicken thigh was tender and decent but lacked wow factor. Another point worth mentioning was the chicken rice chilli sauce - tangy and mildly spicy.

Hakka Noodles with Char Siew (RM7.40)

Not your usual siu mei combo but Toast & Roast did this so well. When I was little, I found Hakka noodles unappetising - to me, dried noodles should be tossed in dark soy sauce and other seasoning and condiments, so the "white" version just didn't seem right. That was history. The Hakka noodle here was nice! The springy noodle tossed in flavourful sautéed minced pork, topped with some pork lard and spring onion. The bowl might seem "pale" but actually exuded different layers of flavour. Of course, the char siew just added a worthy bonus to the bowl.

What do we think about Toast & Roast?

We like Toast & Roast. It's serving great char siew in a modest setting, affordable and liked by many, too.
