No word can describe how satisfying it was to have a guilty pleasure.
We've been eyeing on J's Gate Dining on Level 4, Lot 10 Kuala Lumpur for some while. I wondered why we're always there after a heavy meal (or so) and that had pretty much deterred us from sampling restaurants from J's Gate Dining. Centred on “superior quality ingredients, Japanese hospitality, and a lively atmosphere", this Japanese dining complex of 17 restaurants has gained popularity among food lovers over recent years.
Tonkatsu Anzu is located on level 4 too. We hadn't heard much about this eatery (most probably we haven't been exploring this area frequent enough) but from the menu displayed at the shopfront, we decided to try it.

The interior of the restaurant was really nice and contemporary (of course, more spacious than most of the restaurants in Japan XD). It was only after we had seated that we began to Google a bit about the place. Genius. It's so much of great expectation to know that the pork here is chosen by Chief Chef himself and that the pork cutlets are marinated for 7 days before serving to the customers! Wow. We immediately knew we'd enjoy the premium pork servings.
We flipped through the menu carefully, but Zyan refused to cooperate. He began slapping table, like a silent objection (minus silence) to having no food in his tiny bowl. We had to quickly pour some snacks into his bowl to preserve some peace.
Billy ordered Gin-Jo-Pork Fatty Loin Katsu Set. The word "fatty" was completely tempting and simply irresistible. Service was prompt and friendly, another spot on.
Anzu Set (RM48.90)
Anzu Set came with katsu of the day, shrimp ball katsu, fried vegetable roll and chawanmushi served with rice (of your choice), refillable shredded cabbage salad and dessert. I actually gave three quarter bowl of my rice to Zyan, but I managed to grab a few bites (phew) - I like the rice for being rather chewy and sticky, but every grain of rice was cooked just nice.
Katsu of the day was pork fillet katsu, it was lightly battered, meat was juicy and tender. It wasn't too fatty - which was kind of a minus for me, but that's because I really enjoy eating fatty pork (I now realise the hardship I face in every difficult dieting period). Shrimp ball katsu was a delight too when dipped in the Japanese style tartar sauce. Yums. The vegetable roll, to be very frank, I still don't know what's the vegetables rolled in it, but the pickled vegetables with the right balance of savoury and sweetness really made it a satisfying bite. Yums. Zyan loved everything on his plate, too.
Gin-Jo-Pork Fatty Loin Katsu Set (RM55)
I really think Billy's photography skill was doing this piece of Fatty Loin Katsu unjust. Coated in light batter, the carefully selected premium cut of pork was so tender and juicy, as if it was wrapped in a layer of fats. The middle part of the loin cut was of the right doneness so the whole piece of meat was just a flavoursome gift from paradise. Not even exaggerating.
What do we think about Tonkatsu Anzu?
There aren't a lot of choices when it comes to tonkatsu places. Tonkatsu Anzu can easily occupies an important part in our future selection when we crave for tonkatsu again. The food is legit, ambiance is easy and quiet, and the price is generally acceptable.
