[Travel Diary] Europe 2018 | 9. Lisbon


When we woke up that morning, I told the hubby that we would only have ONE aim that day. The weather was slightly warmer and we couldn't wait to unfold the excitement. It was still quite early when we walked out from our apartment, so we thought of Ascensor da Gloria, a funicular railway which leads to the São Pedro de Alcântara Miradouro.

The ride was awesome! Since it was so early in the morning, we were in the tram with mostly local residents. It seemed that they knew each other - they greeted each other merrily and even showered a little girl with kisses and hugs (we found out later that it was her birthday). The fare was included in our day ticket (or it would be rather expensive). We were rather upset as we arrived at São Pedro de Alcântara Miradouro. The square was fenced up for some construction work, else it would be a great panoramic viewpoint of Lisbon. We walked down, feeling disappointed.

Our only ONE aim that day was the seafood feast at Cervejaria Ramiro. The seafood was so fresh and with the simple method of preparation, the freshness retained. The restaurant is always busy and it's pretty common to queue up for an hour or two during dinner time, but being the first customer that day (hooray!) we waited no time. (Tips: Arrive early!). After that day, we were so convinced that no spices are needed for any seafood dish, if the quality of the seafood itself is marvelous. Just boil and serve it! Like how this place made the dishes.

Fearing the seafood feast might have gotten us cholesterol-overdose (well, it did), we had to refrain ourselves from taking public transport (hey, walk-lah). We literally walked more than 13km that day. It was totally crazy. In Lisbon, 13km is not mere 13km on flat surface. Most roads are built on hilly landscape. It's strenuous activity!

From the second oldest neighborhood of Mouraria, we walked to São Miguel, where we watched some interesting street performances, and then again to the oldest district of Alfama. We treated ourselves to a light dinner in a Fado restaurant.

Wow, Portuguese are good singers!
