Movement Control Order (MCO) has changed the way we travel as a family. We have to base some crucial decisions on the current pandemic condition, but it hasn't much changed our desire for the chance of relaxing at countryside and submerge ourselves in the tranquility of it.
One of our favourite day trip destinations near Kuala Lumpur has definitely been Fraser's Hill. It is located approximately 100km from the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. While it is accessible by car, the winding mountainous road towards the hill resort is often threatened by minor landslides, especially during rainy season. Therefore, it is advisable to plan ahead and double check on the weather before departure. Usually, it will take around 2 - 2.5 hours of driving time to reach the destination.
Before venturing onto the winding road, we always take a quick brunch stop in the quaint little town of Kuala Kubu Bharu. There's our favourite joint for Malaysian style Hainanese food (Read about Sun Sun Nam Cheong here). Although the drive might be slightly challenging, the crisp, cool air in the mountain is completely rewarding. Wind down the car window and embrace the fresh air of pristine nature.
When we were there last weekend (26th July 2020), we were expecting a relaxing retreat, so we made our way to Ye Olde Smokehouse. It is a beautiful countryside bungalow exuding the charm of English architecture. From the exterior structure and landscaping to internal deco and furnishing, everything is meticulously maintained. We love the grassy compound where Zyan can scurry around and explore every little corner of hedges and bushes.
We ordered a set of afternoon tea, which came with homemade scones, strawberry jam and a pot of tea. To make it a set for both Billy and I to enjoy, we ordered another pot of Earl Grey tea. Zyan absolutely loved spending his afternoon time here. He was running around, waving "Hi" and "Bye" to everyone he saw there. To help him sit down quietly, we took along a set of colour pencils and a sketch book for him. There, daddy and mommy got to enjoy a short moment of teatime relaxation.
Apart from lazing over afternoon tea at Ye Olde Smokehouse, day-trippers to Fraser's Hill can also try their hands on outdoor activities such as hiking, bird-watching, horseback riding and even archery! Just taking a leisure stroll around the town area will be good to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life.
In the evening, we made our way back to Kuala Lumpur. Travelling down from Fraser's Hill is via another road, so the one-way traffic makes the drive more bearable. Before reaching home, we stopped by Rawang for dinner. Dinner was awesome but most importantly, it was such a fruitful day!
