Jom EAT! // What to eat in Taipei

It's a foodie capital. A few times when we're in Taipei, we assume travelling around for food is our sole purpose.

Taipei is a true food paradise. Any hour of the day, as long as your stomach growls in hunger, there is something around the corner to satisfy not only your stomach but also your desire for delicious, comfort food.

In this article, we will share about our favourite local eateries and restaurants in Taipei, all deliciously-verified and those that will keep us motivated returning for more.



Cheng Wei Zhen Tainan Noodles 程味珍意麵

Located slightly at the edge of Ximending, Cheng Wei Zhen Tainan Noodles has been around for a few decades. It specializes in Tainan noodles, but we were there to try other dishes - and it was totally addictive. We ordered some lu-wei (滷味) and a bowl of lu-rou-fan(滷肉飯). It was way past dinner time, but the restaurant was still busy. The informal dining experience was very localised - customers can pick their food from trays placed on countertop, the lady standing behind the counter will slice up everything before serving to your table. Did I mention it's tasty?

We could not be bothered about table etiquette anymore.

I especially love the lu-rou-fan - instead of pure minced meat, the chef mixed in some cut pork rind, making the whole dish extremely rich. I won't forget how sticky my lips was after gobbling up the whole bowl of rice. Another highlight was definitely the braised radish - so flavourful that the core of the radish had been stewed thorough.

* lu-wei (滷味) - Meat or other ingredients stewed in soy sauce and other spices, strained before serving

* lu-rou-fan(滷肉飯)- True Taiwanese classic. Minced pork stewed in soy sauce until the gravy thickens, and served on a bowl of rice.

Wu Lao Guo / Elixir Health Pot 無老鍋


Hands down. This is by far the tastiest hot pot experience ever, in our 36 years of life (and still remains unbeatable up to now). There are a few branches in Taipei but we strongly recommend making reservation weeks ahead to avoid disappointment!


Can you see how happy he was? We ordered Twin Side Hotpot(鴛鴦鍋)with Creamy Tofu Hotpot(冰淇淋豆腐鍋)and Spicy Wulao Hotpot(無老麻辣鍋) . Both the soup base were delicious beyond words. I was pregnant then and could not handle spicy food but the aroma from the spicy hotpot was way too tempting. Officially jealous of him. The creamy tofu soup base was so rich and unique - so extraordinary that we couldn't find any other on par just yet.

To go with the hotpot, we ordered some side dishes. All fresh and handled with care.

The layered tofu and coagulated duck blood in the pots were refillable. The friendly staff stopped by our table a few times to ask if we need a refill. As for soup, they thoughtfully put a few jugs of it on our table so we can do self-refill whenever we feel needed. It's a great experience for us, not only the quality of hotpot is commendable but also the impeccable service throughout our dine-in there.

Lao Yuan Huan Food 老圓環食品


This was an unintentional find! We were walking around the area nearby our hotel one morning and suddenly caught in hunger. Since we did not expect such a sudden hunger, we just quickly settled down on a table set on a walkway in front of the shop.

As we ordered, a few friendly locals recommended us on what to order. It seemed this was a good choice indeed. We ordered a bowl of dried noodles, rou-geng(肉羹)and you-fan(油飯). When the food was served, we were not quite sure if it should taste like that, so again the very friendly and helpful locals explained how to add in extra vinegar and chilli to our preferred taste. Such an enlightenment! It did taste a lot better and we gobbled up everything in no time!

* rou-geng(肉羹): Meat soup. Hand-shaped minced meat balls in clear soup. Season it with vinegar and chilli available on the table!

* you-fan(油飯): Chinese rice dish made from glutinous rice and can include soy sauce, oyster sauce, scallions, cilantro and other ingredients.

Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle 阿宗麵線


A bit touristy, we have to admit. However, this is one of our favourite joints to stop by whenever we want a quick snack OR of course, when we are nearby the area. It's awkward that despite providing no dining table nor seating space, this joint is clearly popular for there is always a queue in front of the premise.

LOOK! He's so happy again. The menu is very straightforward - you either go large or small. We opted for large. After paying at the cashier, we grabbed our bowl of noodles (hot!), chose our condiments, decided where to stand and began slurping away. Yes, you have to slurp this in because the texture is so smooth and silky. The gravy was thick and savoury, it tasted like ocean. There were some bites with chewy pig intestines (which I didn't quite like), otherwise all good! It didn't become famous for no reason. (p.s. It is not possible to separate the noodles from the gravy, so just enjoy the whole bowl!)
